What Do We Mean by Community Engagement?

  • At least 1 year (2 consecutive terms) sustained engagement. Use a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal - with clear target(s) and indicator(s)

  • Identified types of actions: Research (mandatory), Advocacy, Indirect, Direct

  • Community partnership: commitment towards engagement, analysing needs, celebrating and empowering assets. This needs to be done collaboratively with community partners on a regular basis (people or planet - depending on the context of your proposal, project or group).

  • Should be outside of NIST (not a school team or school council)

What would work:

  • Service Group Participation

  • Passion Project

What would not work:

  • One day litter picking

  • One activity for a weekend

  • Joining a Service Group sporadically but not engaging with your community partner

  • Not considering how partners have benefited from your contribution, but only focusing on the group

  • Doing something for a few weeks 3 summers in a row
